"Engineers" in Holdens Corner
You will read books to youngsters visiting
the museum and oversee a children’s activity area - encourage coloring, sing
songs and play simple games with children that visit the learning center at
Travel Town. Hours for Holden’s Corner are currently on Sunday afternoons
– We need 2-3 volunteers each Sunday that we have the program.
Tour Guide / Docent Interpreters
Our Docent Interpreters speak for the trains
by leading tours through and around our historical equipment and passenger
cars. They bring history to life with lectures, stories and by answering
questions from curious children. We have simple scripts to study. 2 to 4
Volunteers are needed on the second and third Saturdays of every month from
10 to 4.
Restoration Staff
We have several dedicated men and women
who are currently working on restoring some of our exhibit cars to their
former glory. If you have skills in carpentry, refinishing woodwork, plumbing
or electrical systems, please ask to be referred to our restoration project
leaders. (If you have none of these skills, but still want to help, please
ask... We'll train you!)
Track Building Crew
You will be building track at Travel Town,
moving rail, driving spikes, setting ties, etc. You will be working outside.
This is heavy work. Must be able to follow directions. You must be willing
to work as a team member. You will learn how to build track the
"old-fashioned" way, as well as observing the modern technologies of
pneumatic spike drivers and backhoes. We need 2-8 students on various
Saturdays throughout the year.
Gardening/Organizing Team
We need Gardeners to help maintain the weeds and flowers and organize our workyard, out of the public area. As this is the volunteer storage area, we need to keep it tidy and neat! Must like working outdoors. You will learn various gardening techniques. The Museum is Green in more ways than one - help us recycle and sort cans and bottles. You will be helping to keep this part of Griffith park beautiful! We need 2 students on various Saturdays throughout the year.
